The WDP format is now a relic from the days of Windows Vista (from 2006). Microsoft attempted to establish a successor to the JPEG file format and created Windows Media Photo, also known as HD Photo. Technically speaking, this is JPEG XR (JPEG Extended Range, not to be confused with JPEG XL). In theory, WDP offers better compression than JPG and supports higher colour depths and HDR. In practice, however, the format failed to catch on.

Converting WDP to JPG is a good way to make old photo files readable again without additional software, as the JPG file format is much more widely supported, by virtually all software and web browsers.

Typical use cases and sources of WDP files

As mentioned at the beginning, Microsoft used the WDP format as standard for some time during the Windows Vista era. Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Live Photo Gallery could save images as WDP files. Paint.NET and some digital cameras from that time also used the WDP format, as did various scanner programmes under Windows Vista and, in some cases, Windows 7.
